Damyang Bamboo Garden Area Transforms into an Ecological and Artistic Stay-Type Festival
Opening Ceremony Features Performances by Lee Chanwon and Others, Kicking Off with a Drone Show
The 27th Damyang Bamboo Festival, widely recognized as the nation’s only bamboo-themed ecological and cultural festival, opened on May 2 at the Juknokwon Bamboo Garden area in Damyang.
This year’s festival, held under the theme “Immersed in Damyang Green: The Feast of Bamboo with Daenamoo,” has been designed as a stay-type event that blends the region’s unique ecological resources with artistic content. Coinciding with the golden holiday period, the festival has attracted a steady stream of visitors from the very first day.
On the morning of the opening day, a youth art contest was held at the Flower Tower Square before the official start of the festival. At 4:30 p.m., a lively opening parade featuring a marching band energized the streets.
At 5:00 p.m., singers Lee Chanwon and Ji Changmin took the stage, further heightening the festive atmosphere. At 8:50 p.m., a drone light show lit up the night sky, providing a spectacular start to the festival.
To encourage longer stays, the county is refunding daytime admission fees to Juknokwon in the form of local gift certificates and offering free entry at night. Additional events such as popera, traditional Korean music, and daepiri (bamboo flute) performances are also scheduled for the Juknokwon auxiliary stage.
The festival will continue through May 6. On May 3, there will be a County Residents’ Day celebration, a Bamboo Concert featuring Kim Kyungho Band and Hwang Yunseong. On May 4, the Juksinje Ceremony and a bamboo shoot cooking contest will take place. On Children’s Day, May 5, there will be musicals, magic shows, and drone-making activities for kids. The festival will conclude on May 6 with a bamboo ensemble concert and performances by local artists.
Visitor-participation programs such as SNS certification events, souvenir (goods) sales, and instant photo studios are being held throughout the festival grounds. Visitor amenities, including rest areas and information booths, have also been enhanced across the venue.
On May 3, Damyang County Mayor Jeong Chulwon emphasized, “The Bamboo Festival is more than just a local event; it is a stage to showcase Damyang’s natural and cultural value to the world. We aim to make this a festival where visitors stay longer and leave deeply moved, coloring Damyang in the spirit of May.”
