High Waves Along the Coast Due to Atmospheric Pressure Changes
High Seas and Strong Wind Warnings... Caution Advised for Facilities
Concerns Over Safety Accidents Involving Small Vessels and Coastal Areas
As rapid atmospheric pressure changes occur along the West Coast, rain and strong winds are forecasted for Gwangju and Jeonnam, requiring special caution for safety accidents along the coastal areas. Yonhap News
As rain falls in Gwangju and Jeonnam, rapid atmospheric pressure changes along the West Coast are raising concerns about safety accidents along coastal areas.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on May 3, due to the influence of a low-pressure system moving from the southern part of the West Sea to the East Sea, a rapid atmospheric pressure change of more than 3 hPa within one hour was observed along the West Coast. As a result, weather-related tidal waves may occur due to these pressure fluctuations, and in some places, high waves may overtop coastal roads and breakwaters.
A high seas warning has been issued for the far southern waters of the West Sea, while strong wind advisories are in effect for Heuksando and Hongdo. Waves on the sea are rising as high as 3.5 meters. Preliminary strong wind advisories have also been issued for areas such as Haenam, Wando, and Jindo.
Rainfall of 10 to 40 millimeters is forecasted for Gwangju and Jeonnam on this day, accompanied by strong winds.
An official from the Meteorological Administration urged, "Special caution is needed in managing small vessels and coastal facilities, and please refrain from approaching the coast."
