Ahead of the 2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships, international diplomacy and cultural exchange activities are being actively promoted, stepping onto the global stage.
Since October last year, Gumi City has been directly visiting embassies and consulates general of about 20 countries with diplomatic missions in Korea, out of the 45 member countries of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), to promote the championships.
On the opening day of the event, May 27, the city plans to invite diplomatic delegations to hold a global cooperation meeting and a city tour, providing a venue for sports diplomacy.
In addition, Gumi City will invite overseas delegations composed of officials from international sister and friendship cities such as Otsu in Japan, Changsha, Shenyang, and Guang'an in China, as well as representatives from national athletics associations, to foster practical exchanges and cooperation through sports.
International exchange in the field of culture is also drawing attention. The city is holding the "2025 Gumi Asian Athletics Championships International Youth Art Contest" for its five Chinese sister and friendship cities (Changsha, Shenyang, Guang'an, Weinan, and Yiwu), and more than 230 entries have been submitted so far.
The winning works of the contest will be exhibited to the public at Park Chunghee Gymnasium during the championships.
On April 29 and 30, a group of 25 students from Shazitang Elementary School in Changsha, China, visited Gumi and shared friendship with students from Wangsan Elementary School through a classical music performance and choir.
The delegation also participated in activities such as drone experiences, dance performances, calligraphy, and recitation at the Gangdong Youth Culture Center, providing an opportunity to deepen cultural understanding between the youth of both countries.
Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, stated, "International exchanges were limited due to the pandemic when we won the bid to host the event in 2022, but now the door to full-scale international cooperation is opening." He added, "Through this event, we will enhance Gumi City's status as an international city and achieve tangible results in cooperation across culture, tourism, and industry."
