1,916 Medical Students Notified of Expulsion... "No Further Academic Flexibility"

Five Medical Schools Notify Students Absent Over One Month of Expulsion
Re-admission Only Possible if Vacancies Occur, "Proceeding According to Academic Regulations"

Five medical schools have notified 1,916 students who have been absent without leave for more than a month that they will be expelled in accordance with school regulations.

On May 2, the Ministry of Education announced that five schools, which are required by their academic regulations to expel students who are absent without leave for more than one month, have issued expulsion notices. The ministry also stated that students who do not return will be expelled.

The schools that have completed the notification process are Soonchunhyang University (606 students), Eulji University (299 students), Inje University (557 students), and CHA University Graduate School of Medicine (190 students). Konyang University plans to issue expulsion notices later today to 264 students.

In general, re-admission is only possible if there is a vacancy caused by expulsion. For first-year students in the 2024 and 2025 cohorts, it will be virtually impossible for vacancies to occur, since new students will be admitted next year.

The Ministry of Education stated, "At the meeting of medical school deans on April 30, it was reaffirmed as a principle that there will be no further academic flexibility measures, and that academic regulations will be applied in cases of repeating a year or expulsion." The ministry added, "For students who do not return and therefore meet the requirements for repeating a year or expulsion, the relevant procedures will be carried out in accordance with school regulations."

Previously, on April 30, the Ministry of Education sent an official letter to each university, requesting that they submit by May 7 a report on the status of students subject to repeating a year or expulsion for not returning, as well as their academic management plans.
