Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on May 2 that it had achieved overall victory at the 33rd Jeollanam-do Disabled Sports Competition, which was held in Jangseong County over three days starting from April 30. This marks Suncheon City's second consecutive championship, following its win at the 64th Jeollanam-do Sports Competition.
This year's Jeollanam-do Disabled Sports Competition saw the participation of more than 8,000 athletes and officials from 22 cities and counties across Jeollanam-do. Suncheon City fielded a delegation of 237 people (170 athletes and 67 officials) across 20 sports, showcasing their honed skills and abilities to claim the honor of first place overall.
By sport, Suncheon City took first place in swimming, billiards, rowing, taekwondo, and lawn bowls; second place in dance sports, weightlifting, and table tennis; and third place in athletics and six other events. The city also achieved high rankings across the remaining sports.
In particular, the Suncheon City delegation demonstrated true sportsmanship throughout the competition, and the enthusiastic cheers of citizens that echoed through the venues contributed to the overall victory.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu stated, "The athletes' efforts, prepared with determination and passion, have borne fruit. I give a heartfelt round of applause to everyone on the team who gave their best," adding, "We will continue to provide unwavering support so that our athletes can excel in future competitions."
Meanwhile, with Suncheon City winning the overall championship, Yeosu City took second place and Gwangyang City third, meaning the three cities in the eastern region swept the top three positions.
