Hwang Kyoan Says He Urged Han Ducksoo Not to Run, Laments "What Will Become of This Country" Before Deleting Post

Post Deleted in About 10 Minutes Amidst Controversy
Also Calls for Temporary Suspension of Early Voting for the 63rd Presidential Election

Presidential candidate Hwang Kyoan stated that he tried to dissuade former Prime Minister Han Ducksoo from resigning as prime minister in order to run for office.

On May 2, Hwang posted on his social media, lamenting, "An acting president of an acting president of an acting president... I knew this would happen." He was pointing out the situation in which, following Han Ducksoo's resignation to run for office, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Choi Sangmok also expressed his intention to resign, resulting in Deputy Prime Minister for Education Lee Jooho assuming the role of acting president. Hwang emphasized that he had urged Han Ducksoo not to run and to fulfill his duties until the end, stating, "I earnestly asked Acting President Han Ducksoo not to run and to carry out his responsibilities to the very end." He went on to criticize Han's decision, saying, "What will become of this country," and argued that it has only further deepened national confusion. However, seemingly conscious of the controversy, Hwang deleted the post about ten minutes after uploading it.

Previously, on April 30, former Prime Minister Hwang Kyoan had also requested that Han Ducksoo temporarily suspend early voting. At a press conference in front of SK Telecom’s headquarters that day, Hwang said, "Acting President Han should invoke the president's emergency powers and suspend early voting for this election, so that the election is conducted only with voting on the day of the election." Citing Article 76 of the Constitution, Hwang argued, "Our Constitution grants emergency powers to the president as the head of state," adding, "It is the people's mandate to respond swiftly to unexpected and urgent national crises."

He further pointed out, "Recently, if Chinese nationals use forged identification to participate in early voting, there is absolutely no way for the current early voting system to filter them out." He particularly criticized, "The so-called 'identity verification devices' installed at early voting stations do not have any function to verify a person's identity through fingerprint recognition, which the National Election Commission has already admitted. These devices do not verify identity but merely scan IDs and fingerprints."

He went on to question, "Can we trust the early voting system? How can duplicate voting be prevented?" He also noted, "The National Election Commission has long claimed that 'election data is operated on an internal network, so hacking is absolutely impossible.' However, just a few days ago, they publicly announced that there had been a cyberattack on the election statistics system. Even more shocking, it was confirmed that the contents of the election statistics data were altered after the hacking attempt."
