On May 1, the People Power Party strongly opposed the Democratic Party of Korea's attempt to hold an impeachment vote against Choi Sangmok, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy and Finance. Kwon Seongdong, floor leader of the People Power Party, criticized the attempt to impeach Deputy Prime Minister Choi, saying, "The Democratic Party has ultimately become a tool that disregards the people and serves only the criminal Lee Jaemyung."
After holding a rally condemning the impeachment vote against Deputy Prime Minister Choi, Floor Leader Kwon met with reporters and stated, "Just because Lee Jaemyung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, had his guilty verdict overturned and sent back for retrial, does it make sense or align with principles for the Legislation and Judiciary Committee to suddenly convene an emergency session and urgently submit this to the plenary session?"
The impeachment motion led by the Democratic Party did not proceed to a vote that day. This was because Deputy Prime Minister Choi, the subject of the impeachment, had submitted his resignation, and Han Ducksoo, acting president and prime minister, accepted it just before the vote count, thereby removing the subject of the impeachment.
Floor Leader Kwon commented, "He must have felt he had no choice but to resign," and added, "I understand that Deputy Prime Minister Choi expressed his intention to step down because the Democratic Party initiated impeachment proceedings based on unreasonable grounds, making it meaningless for him to remain in office under such circumstances."
