Kim Dongyeon Criticizes Supreme Court for "Entering Politics" Over Lee Remand Decision

Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated on May 1 regarding the Supreme Court's decision to overturn and remand the conviction of Lee Jaemyung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, that "even the Supreme Court has now entered the political arena."

On his Facebook page that day, Governor Kim wrote, "I cannot help but suspect that this unprecedentedly swift ruling is intended to influence the presidential election."

He added, "Ultimately, it is the people, as sovereigns, who will decide. The people stand above the judiciary."

Earlier that day, the Supreme Court en banc overturned the original acquittal verdict for candidate Lee, who had been indicted for violating the Public Official Election Act, and remanded the case to the Seoul High Court.
