Sister Inna Canavaro Lucas of Brazil, who was recognized as the world's oldest person, passed away on April 30 (local time). She was 116 years old.
According to Yonhap News Agency, citing AFP, the Teresa Sisters of Porto Alegre, Brazil, announced her passing in a statement on the same day, expressing gratitude for her devotion and prayers during her lifetime.
Sister Lucas was born on June 8, 1908, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and became a nun in 1934 at the age of 26. During her lifetime, she attributed her longevity to God, saying, "He is the secret of life and the secret of everything." On her 110th birthday, she received a blessing from Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Sister Lucas was also well known locally in Brazil as an enthusiastic football fan.
SC Internacional, a prestigious professional football club based in Porto Alegre, gave her a team jersey last year as a "birthday gift for the oldest supporter." Sister Lucas became the world's oldest living person after Tomiko Itooka of Japan, who was also 116 years old, passed away in January.
According to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) and Longevity Quest, both organizations dedicated to the study of longevity, the title of the world's oldest person has now passed to Ethel Caterham, age 115, who lives in Surrey, United Kingdom. Previously, Sister Andre (real name Lucile Randon) of France, who was known as the world's oldest nun, passed away in 2023 at the age of 118.
