Hydrogen Compression, Storage, Cooling, and Charging Facilities
to Be Established with 7 Billion Won Investment by 2027
Daejeon City announced that it has been selected for the "2026 Hydrogen Transportation Complex Base Construction Project" hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and will establish the necessary infrastructure for the stable operation of the hydrogen tram on Urban Railway Line 2.
This project involves building a hydrogen transportation complex base at a transportation hub connected to the hydrogen tram. A total project budget of 7 billion won, including 4.7 billion won in national funding, will be invested by 2027.
The base will be equipped with hydrogen compression, storage, cooling, and charging facilities, as well as related auxiliary facilities. It is expected to create an eco-friendly, integrated infrastructure that can also meet the hydrogen charging demand of commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses and trucks.
Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 is a circular tram system with a total length of 38.8 kilometers and 45 planned stations, aiming to open in 2028. In particular, the hydrogen tram, which uses hydrogen fuel cells as its power source, is being recognized nationwide as a leading eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The city plans to complete the first phase of hydrogen charging facilities by 2027, and then, through the second phase of the project, will continue to expand the infrastructure not only for the stable operation of Urban Railway Line 2 but also to promote the spread of hydrogen vehicles within the city center.
A city official stated, "Being selected for this project signifies both the successful introduction of the hydrogen tram and Daejeon's leap toward becoming a future-oriented transportation city," adding, "We will make every effort to ensure the seamless establishment of hydrogen infrastructure for the stable operation of Urban Railway Line 2."
