Seoul City Discloses GPR Special Inspection Results to Public... Announces Open Call for New Ground Subsidence Prevention Technologies

GPR Special Inspection Results Available Online from April 21
Final Selection After New Technology Briefings and On-Site Demonstrations

Seoul City Discloses GPR Special Inspection Results to Public... Announces Open Call for New Ground Subsidence Prevention Technologies Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon visited the underground complex development construction site on Yeongdong-daero in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 23rd and inspected the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) vehicle.

On April 30, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it would disclose the results and follow-up measures of a special inspection using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to address public concerns over ground subsidence accidents. The city also announced an open call for new technologies that can help prevent ground subsidence incidents.

The city is currently conducting enhanced GPR special inspections at five railway construction sites in Seoul, covering a total of 49.3 kilometers, as well as 50 additional locations (covering 45 kilometers) selected by local districts that require priority inspection.

The inspection results have been made available online on the Seoul Safety Nuri platform since April 21. The public can check the inspection period, the sections inspected, the location and size of any detected cavities, and the follow-up actions taken. If a cavity is found, the city completes restoration and then discloses the results of the action taken.

Currently, inspection results can be viewed individually in the form of posts. However, starting in June, the system will be improved to display information on a map based on location data, making it easier to identify inspection sites and follow-up measures.

For citizen reports of ground subsidence, the city has also been disclosing the details of the reports and the results of follow-up actions on the Seoul Safety Nuri platform starting the day after the report is received, beginning April 28.

In addition, the city is holding an open call for new technologies to prevent ground subsidence from April 30 to May 9. The competition is seeking information and communication technology and artificial intelligence (AI)-based measurement and analysis technologies related to the early detection, warning, real-time monitoring, and diagnosis of the causes of ground subsidence. Anyone possessing relevant new technology may participate, regardless of location.

Technologies selected through briefings and on-site demonstrations will be given the opportunity to participate in the city's ground subsidence prevention projects and may receive a mayoral commendation.

Han Byungyong, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Disaster and Safety Office, stated, "We are strengthening GPR inspections to prevent ground subsidence accidents and are transparently disclosing the results to minimize public anxiety. We are also promoting an open call for new technologies that can help prevent ground subsidence, and we look forward to the active participation and interest of companies with outstanding technologies."
