Pilot Operation of Autonomous Vehicles in Gwanggyo, Suwon in May

An autonomous vehicle will be pilot operated in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province next month.

On April 30, Suwon City announced that it will conduct a pilot operation of autonomous vehicles from May 28 to 30, coinciding with the '2025 Suwon ITS Asia-Pacific Forum.' The vehicles will circulate along a 3.2-kilometer route connecting Suwon Convention Center, Gwanggyo Jungang Station, Hongjaegyo Samgeori, and Central Park-ro Sageori. This marks the first time that autonomous vehicles will be operated in Suwon. A total of five autonomous vehicles will be in service, operating in 30-minute intervals from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Previously, Suwon City established a real-time traffic signal information system through its 'Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Implementation Project.' This system is designed to deliver accurate real-time signal information to autonomous vehicles, even in situations where signal data cannot be collected due to severe weather or obstacles.

The city also created a high-precision map that incorporates road lanes and signs, providing a safe driving environment for autonomous vehicles.

Lee Jaeyoon, Mayor of Suwon, stated, "The pilot operation of autonomous vehicles will serve as an important milestone that demonstrates Suwon's potential as a future mobility city," adding, "We will further strengthen our efforts to build ITS so that citizens can experience advanced technology in their daily lives."

Meanwhile, the '2025 Suwon ITS Asia-Pacific Forum,' co-hosted by Suwon City and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, will be held from May 28 to 30 at the Suwon Convention Center and throughout Suwon, under the theme 'Hyper-Connected Cities by ITS.'

The event will feature high-level meetings attended by ministers and vice ministers, academic sessions, exhibitions and business consultations, technical tours, citizen participation programs, and official and social events. More than 10,000 participants from over 20 countries are expected to attend.
