Media Outlets Notified
No Autocomplete or Search Suggestions for Candidate Names
On April 30, Naver announced that it had launched a special page for the 21st Presidential Election on April 29, providing a wide range of election-related information. At the same time, the company disclosed its operating guidelines for candidate information services.
The special page for the 21st Presidential Election consists of several sections: "Media PiCK," which features major election articles selected directly by each media outlet; "Polls," which aggregates news reports, analyses, and special features on opinion polls from various news organizations; and "Special Live," which offers live broadcasts of special election coverage and exit poll results on election day.
Since October 2018, Naver News has operated the "media-specific comment selection system," allowing each news outlet to decide whether to enable comments on their articles. This system will remain in place during the election period. For news in the election section, the availability and sorting options for comments are determined by each media outlet's policy. Only accounts that have completed identity verification can post up to 20 comments within 24 hours.
Naver will strengthen its 24-hour monitoring by increasing the number of dedicated staff responsible for monitoring news comments. The company has also established hotlines between departments to minimize the possibility of macro activities and fraudulent behavior.
During the election period, requests to delete comments related to candidates will be handled in accordance with the policies of the Korea Internet Self-governance Organization (KISO) and will follow the decisions of the National Election Commission based on relevant laws.
In addition, starting April 29, Naver has implemented a technology that displays a notification on articles and sends alerts to media outlets if a particular comment within an article receives a concentrated increase in likes or dislikes beyond a certain threshold. This is intended to prevent excessive conflict or polarization in comment writing and reactions.
After the presidential candidate registration closes on May 11, Naver will provide candidate information such as name, photo, birth date, occupation, and education, as supplied by the National Election Commission. In addition, autocomplete and search suggestion features for candidate names will be restricted. This policy is consistent with those applied during the 20th Presidential Election in 2022 and the 22nd National Assembly Election in 2024. Furthermore, even if a user's search term is presumed to be a typo during the election period, candidate names will not be shown as search suggestions.
