Regarding the Timing of Announcing Negotiation Agreements
Framework for Trade Agreements to Be Established Before Elections in Countries Like South Korea
On April 29 (local time), U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant stated regarding tariff negotiations, "The outline of negotiations with South Korea is gradually taking shape."
At a briefing on the economic achievements of President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office, held at the White House that morning, Secretary Besant was asked about the timing of announcing agreements with Asian countries such as South Korea, India, and Japan. He responded, "These countries have been the most active in cooperating during the negotiations." However, he did not provide details about the specific contents of the negotiations with South Korea.
On April 24, Secretary Besant, together with U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer, held the "Korea-U.S. 2+2 Trade Consultation" in Washington with Choi Sangmok, South Korea's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, and Ahn Deokgeun, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Regarding the possibility that the conclusion of negotiations could be delayed due to major political events in Asian countries, such as South Korea's June 3 presidential election and Japan's July House of Councillors election, Secretary Besant said, "The governments of these countries want to establish the framework for trade agreements before the elections, so they can demonstrate that they have successfully conducted negotiations with the United States before voters go to the polls."
He added, "Therefore, we are confirming that they are even more willing to come to the negotiating table and resolve these issues before engaging in their election campaigns."
