A survey found that six out of ten Americans believe President Donald Trump's policies have worsened the U.S. economic situation.
According to a poll conducted by CNN and the research firm SSRS, which surveyed 1,678 American adults from April 17 to 24 and released the results on April 28 (local time), 59% of respondents said that President Trump's policies have made the U.S. economic situation worse. This figure is up 8 percentage points from the March survey, which recorded 51%.
When asked about the likelihood of a recession occurring next year, 69% of respondents said it was possible. Notably, 32% of all respondents said it was "very likely."
Only 34% of respondents said they were optimistic about the U.S. economy. Meanwhile, 29% described themselves as pessimistic, and 37% said they were worried, meaning negative responses significantly outnumbered positive ones.
Respondents expressed particular concern about President Trump's tariff policy. Of those surveyed, 55% said Trump's tariff measures were bad policy, while only 28% considered them good policy.
In addition, 72% of respondents said President Trump's tariff policy would have a negative impact on the U.S. economy in the short term, while only 12% believed it would be helpful. Regarding the long-term effects on the U.S. economy, 53% had a negative outlook and 34% had a positive outlook.
When asked about the impact of the tariff policy on the United States' global standing, 60% said it would have a negative effect, while only 26% believed it would be beneficial. Regarding the impact of the tariff policy on their personal financial situation, 59% had a negative outlook, while only 15% responded positively.
