Strengthening River Safety Inspections Through Inter-Agency Cooperation
Intensive Management of Flood-Prone Areas and Additional CCTV Installation
The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office has begun strengthening its response system in cooperation with related agencies to prevent flood damage during the summer season.
On April 29, the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, together with the Yeongsangang Flood Control Office, held a "Flood Response Workshop" in the main auditorium on the first floor of the Yeongsangang office building. The workshop was attended by about 70 officials from local water management agencies, including the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, metropolitan and basic local governments, Korea Water Resources Corporation, and Korea Rural Community Corporation.
The workshop covered topics such as the 2025 summer weather outlook, flood response plans for each agency, and inter-agency cooperation measures. Participants also discussed specific countermeasures to prevent flood damage.
The Environmental Office recently signed a business agreement with the Korea Rural Community Corporation to flexibly adjust the management water level of estuary barrages during the flood season. In addition, a safety inspection of all sections of national rivers is being carried out, and any insufficient sections will be improved by the end of May.
The office has designated 100 areas with a high risk of flood damage as "vulnerable zones" for intensive management, and is strengthening preemptive measures such as providing local residents with evacuation guidelines and flood information. In particular, for 19 vulnerable zones that reached dangerous water levels last year, the head of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office and deputy heads of local governments are conducting joint on-site inspections.
Facility expansion is also underway. In addition to the existing 373 CCTV monitoring points installed along all sections of national rivers, 61 additional monitoring points will be set up in newly upgraded river sections such as Hwangryonggang, Osucheon, and Suncheondongcheon, to further strengthen real-time monitoring at the flood control situation room.
Director Kim Youngwoo stated, "It is difficult to accurately predict disaster situations due to climate change, but we can reduce damage by preparing through inter-agency cooperation. We will do our utmost to protect the lives and property of local residents through continuous collaboration and communication."
