Hyundai Steel's Steel Plates for Hydrogen Transport Prove Performance, Meet International Standards

Passed the 'RINA-CSM' High-Pressure Environment Test
Recorded 82 Megapascals, Exceeding International Standards

The high-performance steel plate developed by Hyundai Steel for hydrogen transportation has met international standards.

On April 29, Hyundai Steel announced that its high-performance steel plate, used in hydrogen transportation pipes, has passed the high-pressure hydrogen environment test conducted by the international certification body 'RINA-CSM.' RINA-CSM is a specialized testing and certification institution for metal materials established under the initiative of the Italian government, focusing on performance verification in metal material technology. For this test, Hyundai Steel's subsidiary Hyundai Steel Pipe manufactured large-diameter pipes for hydrogen transportation using Hyundai Steel's plates, while Hyundai Welding Materials provided the welding materials, demonstrating a collaborative technological effort.

By passing this test, these pipes have been confirmed to meet internationally recognized design and construction standards for hydrogen pipelines. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) sets specifications for piping and pipelines handling liquid and gaseous hydrogen, as well as hydrogen-mixed gases. In particular, Hyundai Steel's pipes demonstrated hydrogen embrittlement resistance at 82 MPa (megapascals), exceeding the international standard of 55 MPa. Hydrogen embrittlement refers to the ability of metal materials to withstand high-pressure hydrogen environments without easily fracturing.

Large-diameter pipes that transport high-pressure hydrogen from production sites to demand locations require steel plates with high pressure resistance and high toughness. Hyundai Steel stated that it can supply its steel materials to both domestic and international companies manufacturing hydrogen transportation pipes, and announced plans to actively pursue business opportunities in this field.

A Hyundai Steel representative said, "This performance verification is an example of Hyundai Steel's advanced steel technology for the hydrogen era being internationally recognized," adding, "Going forward, we will continue to expand the application of Hyundai Steel's high-performance steel plates to various infrastructure, including hydrogen pipeline networks and storage facilities."
