Samsung Heavy Industries Signs MOU with H-Line Shipping for Cooperation on Digital Solutions for Ships

Commercialization of Customized Digital Solutions for Ships

On April 29, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with H-Line Shipping for cooperation on digital solutions for ships.

Through this MOU, the two companies have agreed to enhance digital systems required to improve the operational efficiency and safety of large vessels, and to collaborate on commercial validation through application to actual ships.

Samsung Heavy Industries plans to equip LNG carriers currently under construction at its Geoje Shipyard, ordered by H-Line Shipping, with an "economic operation solution" and a "ship management solution." For bulk carriers operating on the Korea-Australia route, the company plans to apply the "economic operation solution" and an "environmental regulation compliance solution."

The "economic operation solution" is an advanced system that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning technologies to derive optimal routes and operational strategies based on operating conditions, thereby reducing fuel consumption. On LNG carriers, it can also optimize the management of boil-off gas in cargo tanks, simultaneously reducing both fuel usage and cargo loss.

The "ship management solution," based on digital twin technology, maximizes vessel safety by monitoring in real time the condition of key equipment during navigation, as well as structural strength and fatigue performance according to operating conditions.

The "environmental regulation compliance solution" collects and analyzes various data required to respond to international environmental regulations, such as mandatory reporting of ship fuel usage and the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and provides this information.

Samsung Heavy Industries and H-Line Shipping plan to use this collaboration not only to commercialize digital solutions, but also to promote the application of smart ship-based automation and unmanned technologies in the industry.

Jang Haegi, Executive Vice President and Head of Technology Development at Samsung Heavy Industries, said, "Digital solutions are core technologies that serve as the brain of a ship," adding, "Samsung Heavy Industries will devote all efforts to developing customized digital technologies through close cooperation with customers."
