Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will replace all concrete manhole covers with cast iron manhole covers to prevent safety accidents caused by aging manhole covers.
Concrete manhole covers can damage the cityscape due to cracks and corrosion, and are vulnerable to impact, which can lead to accidents. In the first half of this year, Suwon City conducted a comprehensive inspection of 4,475 manhole covers within its jurisdiction and plans to replace all of them in stages.
Suwon City will first replace 600 manhole covers with cast iron covers by October this year, focusing on old downtown areas where there is a high risk of damage due to the age of installation and high pedestrian traffic. The city will then replace 1,800 covers in 2026 and 2,075 covers in 2027.
A Suwon City official stated, "By replacing all concrete manhole covers, we will provide citizens with a safe and pleasant walking environment."
