LG Electronics and MediaTek Unveil New In-Vehicle Infotainment Technology Featuring Google OS

Simultaneous Control of In-Vehicle Displays
Rising Demand for Displays Alongside SDV Growth
CMU Solution Based on Google OS Implemented

LG Electronics has introduced a new in-vehicle content technology in collaboration with global semiconductor company MediaTek. By developing an operating system together with Google, the company has created an in-vehicle environment that enables integrated control and operation of all displays.

On April 29, LG Electronics announced that it is exhibiting a new in-vehicle infotainment (information + entertainment) solution at MediaTek's booth at 'Auto Shanghai 2025', Asia's largest motor show, which is being held from April 23 to May 2. This solution allows users to enjoy different content on multiple in-vehicle displays using only a single chip and operating system (OS).

Through this collaboration, LG Electronics has integrated its Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) solution?developed jointly with Google and based on Android Automotive OS?into MediaTek's in-vehicle infotainment integrated system-on-chip, the Dimensity Auto platform. The CMU solution is a next-generation in-vehicle infotainment technology that enables passengers to seamlessly enjoy different content on their individual displays simultaneously within a single operating system. It was developed to meet the growing demand for in-vehicle content consumption as displays inside software-defined vehicles (SDVs) become larger and more diverse.

Previously, running various content simultaneously on an in-vehicle infotainment system required installing separate operating systems for each display. In contrast, Android Automotive OS with CMU enables integrated control and operation of all displays with a single operating system, effectively creating an environment similar to having multiple Android devices. As a result, it efficiently reduces the resources required for the central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage, while minimizing system load to create a comfortable in-vehicle content environment.

For example, while the driver uses navigation, the front passenger can watch YouTube, and a child in the rear seat can play games?each operating content independently on their respective displays in accordance with safety regulations. Each user can also set up individual login accounts, settings, content sharing, and parental controls.

LG Electronics and MediaTek have been working together since last year to further advance the CMU solution. The newly introduced CMU solution provides a high-quality content experience while maintaining price competitiveness, allowing automaker clients to achieve both cost efficiency and development convenience. In addition, since it is based on a single operating system, system integration is simplified and maintenance requirements are reduced.

LG Electronics continues to introduce SDV solutions for automaker clients. At CES 2025 in January, the company showcased the 'xDC (Cross Domain Controller)' platform, developed in partnership with Qualcomm, which can integrate control of both IVI and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) on a single chip, demonstrating its technological leadership in future vehicles. This platform integrates various in-vehicle functions into a single controller based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride Flex chip.

Lee Seokhyeon, Executive Vice President and head of LG Electronics' VS Business Division, stated, "By expanding partnerships with various global companies based on our innovative solutions and differentiated technological capabilities, we will take the lead in shaping the future vehicle technology ecosystem and driving the transition to SDVs."
