The 15th National Conference of Korean Fisheries Entrepreneurs began a three-day schedule on the 28th at the Yeosu World Expo Hall, with about 10,000 people in attendance.
This year's conference, held under the theme "The Power to Open the Future of Fisheries, the Sea of Coexistence in Yeosu," serves as a venue for fisheries entrepreneurs to strengthen unity and share a vision for the future. The Yeosu conference is being held again 28 years after the first conference in 1997.
In particular, conference officials explained that this year's event aims to share a vision for sustainable fisheries and prosperous fishing villages.
The commemorative ceremony was attended by Jeonnam Governor Kim Youngrok, National Assembly members Joo Cheolhyeon, Seo Cheonho, and Moon Daerim, officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Park Sanguk, President of the Korea Fisheries Entrepreneurs Association, Lee Taeyong, President of the Jeonnam branch of the Korea Fisheries Entrepreneurs Association, Yeosu Mayor Jeong Gimyeong, and other leaders of fisheries-related organizations.
The event featured a variety of programs, including commendations for contributors to the development of maritime and fisheries, promotional activities by related organizations, direct sales and food events featuring seafood, academic sessions, celebratory performances, and singing contests. Participants also shared their visions for the future of the fisheries industry.
In his welcoming remarks, Governor Kim Youngrok stated, "As the son of a fisherman born on an island, I believe that we need to secure more national funding to further develop maritime and fisheries culture."
Governor Kim went on to emphasize, "Together with National Assembly members and other organization leaders, I will work to achieve the 10 major policy tasks for Korean fisheries entrepreneurs, which include creating a sea where fishermen and offshore wind power can coexist and strengthening support for seafood consumption promotion." He added, "We will also strive to achieve a 10 trillion won government budget for maritime and fisheries, including the large-scale implementation of the 1 trillion won seaweed export cluster project."
Jeonnam Province plans to use this conference as an opportunity to accelerate preparations for the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo and will actively work to revitalize the regional economy through the joint growth of the fisheries industry and marine tourism.
