The city of Gwangju is dispatching a volunteer group to the wildfire-affected Gyeongbuk region to assist with emergency recovery efforts. On April 28, the Gwangju volunteer group will visit greenhouse farms and other sites in Uiseong County, Gyeongbuk, that have suffered wildfire damage, and will carry out volunteer activities such as waste removal for rapid recovery.
This initiative is part of the "Sharing Warmth Campaign" involving 16 cities and provinces nationwide. The participants include 76 staff and volunteers from the Gwangju City and five district volunteer centers, 10 members from corporate councils, 20 members from the Gwangju Saemaeul Association, and 10 members from the Honam University Volunteer Fire Brigade, totaling around 120 people.
The participants will engage in practical recovery work, such as greenhouse waste disposal and cleanup. The budget for the recovery efforts has been supported by the Community Chest of Korea and the Korea Central Volunteer Center.
The city plans to deliver warm solidarity and comfort to residents affected by wildfires in the Gyeongbuk region through this support activity, and to help them return to daily life quickly through the power of civic cooperation.
Gwangju Mayor Kang Kijeong stated, "I am grateful to the citizens who voluntarily gathered to share in the pain of the wildfire-affected areas," and added, "I hope this will provide at least some support to the residents affected by the wildfires, and we will continue to spare no effort in supporting disaster site recovery wherever help is needed."
Meanwhile, in March, the city of Gwangju provided 250 million won in disaster relief funds to the Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Ulsan regions, which suffered significant damage from large wildfires. The city also delivered emergency relief kits, Gwangju Master Kimchi, cup noodles, and other relief supplies to Cheongsong County and Sancheong County.
