"520,000 Won Monthly Parking Fee for Four Cars"
Apartment's "Drastic Measure" to Tackle Parking Shortage Draws Attention
As parking shortages become increasingly severe in apartment complexes nationwide, a notice from one apartment complex announcing a tiered parking fee system?charging up to 520,000 won per month depending on the number of vehicles owned?has become a topic of discussion.
On April 24, a post titled "Parking Fees in Our Apartment" appeared on the online community BobaeDream, along with a photo of the official notice detailing this system.

According to the notice, parking is free for households owning one vehicle. For households with two vehicles, the monthly parking fee is 20,000 won. However, owning three vehicles incurs a monthly fee of 220,000 won, and four vehicles results in a fee of 520,000 won. Households with five or more vehicles are not permitted to park.
The parking time for visitor vehicles is also limited to 100 hours per month per household. If this limit is exceeded, an additional fee of 1,000 won per hour is charged. For example, if the total parking time for visitor vehicles in a month reaches 130 hours, a parking fee of 30,000 won (30 hours x 1,000 won) must be paid for the excess 30 hours.
The author, identified as A, posted the notice photo and commented, "This is refreshing. It would have been even better if parking from the third vehicle onward was not allowed." After reading A's post, other users responded mostly positively, saying things like, "Our apartment needs to implement this urgently," "Should I post this in our apartment group chat?" "There are quite a few people who pretend to be visitors to avoid registering their cars," "This apartment management is doing a great job. I'm envious," "If you can afford to own four cars, this isn't even a burdensome amount," and "This should be implemented in apartments nationwide."

Some comments also noted that similar tiered parking fee systems are already being implemented in several apartment complexes. User B stated, "In the apartment complex where I live, which has 1,757 households, the fee system is: one vehicle is free, two vehicles cost 5,000 won, three vehicles cost 200,000 won, and four vehicles cost 500,000 won." B added, "After switching to paid parking, there are always more than 50 parking spaces available at any time, which has alleviated the parking shortage." User C shared, "When double parking escalated to triple parking, we imposed a fee of 10,000 won for the second vehicle and 200,000 won for the third, while the first vehicle remained free. This created more available parking spaces."
Meanwhile, under current law, the standard for parking lot installation is an average of at least one parking space per household (or at least 0.7 spaces per household if the exclusive area is 60 square meters or less). This standard has remained unchanged for 27 years since it was revised in 1996. However, as the number of registered vehicles in apartment complexes continues to rise, more complexes are experiencing parking shortages.
