The Only Korean LLM Company Recognized
Upstage Selected as Korea's First and Only Developer of AI Foundation Models
Upstage announced on April 28 that it has been selected as one of the "2025 Global AI Top 100 Companies" by the global market research firm CB Insights.
CB Insights annually evaluates unlisted artificial intelligence (AI) companies worldwide based on overall business performance, technological capabilities, investment status, and workforce composition, selecting 100 companies that are expected to lead the AI industry. Marking its ninth year, the "AI 100" list was released in three categories: "AI Infrastructure" focused on foundational technologies, "Horizontal AI" centered on general-purpose automation, and "Vertical AI" specializing in industry-specific applications.
Upstage was selected in the "AI Infrastructure" category, becoming the only Korean company to develop foundation models, which serve as the backbone of generative AI. This marks the first time a Korean LLM company has been included in the list. The recognition is attributed to the global technological excellence of its proprietary optical character recognition-based document processing technology "Document Parse" and its large language model (LLM) "Solar."
Excluding U.S. companies, only 27 companies from 13 countries were selected for this year's AI 100. Through this selection, Upstage has not only demonstrated the global competitiveness of its own AI models but also reaffirmed its status as a leading AI company representing Korea.
Building on this achievement, Upstage plans to accelerate AI transformation across industries and intensify its global market strategy, focusing on its U.S. and Japan subsidiaries. The company is preparing to unveil new products, including the next-generation version of Solar with expanded model parameters, its first inference model implementing "Chain of Thought (CoT)," and a multimodal model combining optical character recognition and large language models.
Kim Sung-hoon, CEO of Upstage, stated, "This selection is significant not only as a testament to Upstage's technological capabilities but also as proof of the strength of Korea's AI industry on the global stage. We will lead efforts to expand the AI work standards established in Korea to global markets such as the United States, Japan, and Thailand, so that Korea's standards can become the world's standards."
