Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Kim Myungsoo met with the Chief of the Turkish General Staff on April 28 to discuss ways to enhance military cooperation between the two countries.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that Chairman Kim held talks with Chief of the Turkish General Staff Metin Gurak (Army General) at the Joint Chiefs of Staff headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, on the morning of April 28, discussing measures to strengthen military cooperation between South Korea and Turkey.
On this day, Chairman Kim and Chief Gurak shared the view that "the recent advancement of North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities, as well as the strengthening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, pose a global threat, including to the Korean Peninsula." They also engaged in in-depth discussions on defense innovation, such as manned-unmanned teaming combat systems, and shared perspectives on the future development of military capabilities suitable for the evolving battlefield environment.
Chairman Kim stated, "Turkey is a 'brother nation' that fought for the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea during the Korean War, and is a 'strategic partner'." He further emphasized that NATO and the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable, and called for continued close cooperation between the militaries of both countries to safeguard the freedom and peace of the international community.
Meanwhile, Chief Gurak will remain in South Korea until April 29. As part of his first official visit, he visited the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan. In addition, after meeting with Chairman Kim in the morning, he paid a courtesy call on Acting Minister of National Defense Kim Sunho to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in defense and the defense industry.
