Full-scale Preparations Begin for the 16th Gwangju Biennale

On the 25th, Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijeong met with Ho Tzu Nyen, the Artistic Director of the 16th Gwangju Biennale, in the City Hall reception room to discuss the direction of the Biennale's planning and strategies for its successful hosting, which is scheduled for September next year. Mayor Kang and Director Ho Tzu Nyen continued their conversation by sharing the historical significance of the Gwangju Biennale and the identity of Gwangju.
Director Ho Tzu Nyen expressed his ambition, saying, "I will strive to ensure that the 16th Gwangju Biennale provides people with positive energy and becomes a Biennale that incorporates changes in individuals, society, and technology. I hope this event will serve as an opportunity for people to realize that the potential for change lies within each individual."
Mayor Kang stated, "With Han Kang's Nobel Prize, the prominence of the AI industry, and recent events such as martial law and impeachment, the 16th Biennale is taking place in a changed environment compared to the 15th edition. I fully agree with the idea that the inspiration for change exists within each person, and I will actively support the 16th Gwangju Biennale so that people can experience this through the event."
Director Ho Tzu Nyen is a Singaporean artist, media artist, film director, and curator. Through research and application of advanced technologies such as digital and artificial intelligence, he has been involved in various creative activities including film, video, performance, and immersive multimedia installations.
In particular, he has a connection with Gwangju, having participated in the 12th Gwangju Biennale in 2018 and the 13th Gwangju Biennale Commission in 2021. With his deep interest in digital technology and artificial intelligence, there are high expectations for collaboration with Gwangju, which is known as a "representative city of artificial intelligence."
The Gwangju Biennale Foundation plans to begin concrete preparations starting with the formation of the curatorial team in June, followed by outlining the event plan, confirming participating artists, and organizing exhibition spaces. The Pavilion exhibition is also pursuing partnerships with leading cultural institutions worldwide, which is expected to further enhance Gwangju's status as a global city of visual arts.
Meanwhile, Gwangju City plans to continuously discover unique and world-class cultural and artistic content through a close cooperative system with the Artistic Director.
