"Showcasing Both Thrills and Cultural Identity"
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of the Netflix series "Squid Game," has been selected as the recipient of the Creator Tribute at the Gotham Awards. According to the Gotham Film and Media Institute, which organizes the event, he will receive the trophy at this year's ceremony to be held in New York, United States, on June 2.
The Gotham Awards is an independent film and drama awards ceremony that has been held annually since 1991. The Creator Tribute is awarded to creators who have broadened the horizons of television and made a significant impact.
The Gotham Awards stated, "'Squid Game' has received worldwide acclaim and has established itself as a landmark in modern TV series," adding, "Director Hwang captivated viewers with a series that combines both thrills and cultural identity."
"Squid Game" previously won the Breakthrough Series Over 40 Minutes award at the 2021 Gotham Awards. This is the first time Director Hwang has received a Creator Tribute at a major international awards ceremony.
