Delta Passengers Seen Holding Up Ceiling as Panel Falls During Flight

Ceiling Panel Suddenly Falls During Flight
Passengers Hold It Up by Hand Until Resolved
Fortunately, No Injuries Reported in the Incident

There has been growing controversy as incidents of interior ceiling panels detaching have occurred consecutively on Delta Air Lines' Boeing 757 and 717 aircraft in the United States. On April 22, foreign media outlets including the New York Post reported that on April 14, a ceiling panel fell on a Boeing 757 flight traveling from Santa Ana, California to Atlanta, resulting in one passenger being injured. The injured passenger received treatment from emergency medical personnel after arriving in Atlanta, before boarding a connecting flight. The airline stated that its cabin maintenance team promptly resolved the issue.

However, on the same day, controversy intensified when a panel fell on a Boeing 717 flight from Atlanta to Chicago, forcing passengers to physically support the ceiling with their hands. In particular, the Boeing 717 flight accident is causing a stir as it spreads across online communities and social networking services (SNS). A video shared by an influencer shows passengers holding onto the ceiling during the flight. The video has recorded over 200,000 views.

The influencer who shared the video explained, "My friend was on a Delta flight, and the ceiling collapsed," adding, "They had to hold it up for quite a while until the flight attendants secured it with tape." Delta Air Lines stated, "The panel on the Boeing 717 was reattached so that customers would no longer need to hold it themselves." The airline added that there were no injuries from the incident, and passengers were transferred to another aircraft, resulting in a flight delay of about two hours.

Viewers who saw the video commented, "Considering the ticket prices airlines charge, there should never be a case where the plane breaks down during flight," and, "Imagine if this had happened during turbulence." On the other hand, some users argued that this incident did not pose a serious safety issue, stating, "This is a cosmetic problem and no one was in danger," and, "It is not a structural defect in the aircraft at all." Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines immediately issued apologies for both incidents. For the Boeing 757 incident, emergency medical support was provided, and for the Boeing 717 incident, passengers were reportedly compensated with 10,000 mileage points (equivalent to $100).
