"The River We Must Cross Now Is the River of Impeachment"
Han Ducksoo to Deliver Supplementary Budget Speech at National Assembly on April 24
Representative Ahn Cheolsoo, a presidential primary candidate for the People Power Party, argued on April 24 that Acting President and Prime Minister Han Ducksoo should not run in the June 3 presidential election.
On this day, Representative Ahn wrote on social media, "His candidacy would be an abdication of responsibility. Please do not run," adding, "The river we must cross now is the river of impeachment."
Representative Ahn explained, "Acting President Han is the only prime minister of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, which was impeached," and stated, "He cannot be free from responsibility for the failure of state affairs, martial law, or impeachment." He went on to say, "Acting President Han's candidacy runs counter to common sense and the wishes of the people."
Representative Ahn also pointed out that the United States, under the Donald Trump administration, is currently in a trade war with Korea, stating, "In order to respond to the tariff bomb from the United States, we must focus on diplomatic and trade fronts." He emphasized, "Considering that the U.S. government's policies are decided within six months of an administration taking office, now is not the time to contemplate running for office, but rather the time to protect the national interest."
In addition, Representative Ahn said, "A candidacy that is pushed forward without justification or determination cannot gain the support of the people," and added, "Some political factions within the party are encouraging his candidacy for their own interests, but I hope Acting President Han will conclude his public service with dignity and conviction until the very end."
Representative Ahn continued, "There is neither justification nor practical benefit to Acting President Han's candidacy," and pointed out, "This is no different from former President Yoon Suk Yeol running again, and it will never be able to stop Lee Jaemyung."
Meanwhile, Acting President Han is scheduled to visit the National Assembly on this day to deliver a speech on the supplementary budget bill. The Democratic Party of Korea has announced that it will protest in silence during the plenary session, stating that this is effectively a 'declaration of candidacy.'
