"Securing Undisclosed Patents" KAIST to Launch 'RID Membership Program'

KAIST announced on April 24 that its Center for Technology Value Creation will launch the "RID (Rapid Invention Disclosure) Membership Program" starting in August. This program will allow member companies to gain early access to KAIST's outstanding patented technologies before they are made available to the public, helping companies secure the optimal timing for technology acquisition.

The RID Membership Program is a system that proactively shares patented technologies with member companies within 18 months after patent filing, but before public disclosure. Through this, companies can review commercialization and collaboration opportunities at an early stage, without having to wait for the official technology disclosure, thereby enabling them to capitalize on the "golden time" for technology transfer.

The RID Membership Program is a paid service designed for customized participation by each company. Participation can be optimized according to each company's technology acquisition strategy. The Center for Technology Value Creation plans to officially launch the related website in August.

Through this program, the Center for Technology Value Creation will select approximately 100 outstanding patented technologies each year and provide technology information to companies with whom it has established trusted partnerships, under a system that ensures both security and legal stability.

Looking at KAIST's technology transfer record, it can be seen that 40% of domestic patents lead to technology transfer agreements within two years of filing.

In particular, about 60% of technologies designated as outstanding patents among those filed internationally have resulted in actual technology transfers. This not only demonstrates the high market demand for KAIST's high-quality patents but also serves as an indicator of the commercialization potential and industrial competitiveness of KAIST's technologies.

Lee Geonjae, Head of the Center for Technology Value Creation, stated, "The greatest strength of the RID Membership Program is that it can accelerate the technology commercialization timeline by more than a year by sharing relevant technologies from the earliest stage of the patent lifecycle." He added, "This program will serve as a strategic tool to accelerate industry-academia technology collaboration and support domestic companies in securing an advantage in the global technology supremacy race."

Meanwhile, KAIST continues to achieve steady results in technology commercialization, recording a total of 8.1 billion KRW in technology licensing income last year and signing an average of 69 technology transfer agreements annually.
