Konan Technology to Tackle New Voice Phishing with AI... Selected for National Project

Konan Technology, an artificial intelligence (AI) software specialist, announced on the 24th that it has been awarded a national AI project to detect new types of voice phishing at an early stage.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) have launched a project to develop technology capable of detecting and predicting new voice phishing techniques in real time. The emergence of intelligent crimes that abuse AI, such as deepfake voice and malicious app integration, has made it difficult to respond with existing methods.

Konan Technology will participate as a joint research institution in the project titled "Development of Technology for Detecting and Predicting Unknown New Voice Phishing." The total project budget amounts to 7.8 billion KRW, with Konan Technology responsible for 2 billion KRW of the research and development costs. The research period is set until December 31, 2028.

Konan Technology plans to develop a real-time voice phishing detection model based on a scalable large language model (sLLM) and machine learning, and to advance detection technology based on keywords and conversation context. By analyzing conversation context, the company aims to identify previously unknown abnormal signs and criminal methods at an early stage, thereby preventing voice phishing crimes in advance.

The project will also include quantitative research and development to improve the accuracy and speed of text AI-based prediction, as well as the development of lightweight voice phishing detection algorithms and apps that can operate in on-device environments.

The selection of the project was reportedly influenced by systematic data collection and construction plans, as well as advanced technology composition strategies. During the evaluation process, the consortium including Konan Technology received high marks for its step-by-step data processing roadmap, framework-based module design, RAG-based scenario generation strategy, and demonstration linkage plan. The hybrid detection technology approach and the research team's high level of understanding and execution capabilities were also cited as strengths.

Seo Youngju, Executive Director of the Voice Group and head of research and development for the project at Konan Technology, said, "It is meaningful to participate in the development of technology to respond to new types of voice phishing that threaten the public," adding, "Through this project, we will accelerate both the prevention of financial fraud and the practical application of AI technology."

Konan Technology is the only domestic company independently developing AI core technology across text, voice, and video. Since its establishment in 1999, it has expanded its business domain from natural language analysis to voice and video search, solidifying its position in the industry.
