Gyeonggi Province to Conduct Intensive Inspection of 1,425 Small-Scale Private Sewage Treatment Facilities

Gyeonggi Province will conduct inspections of private sewage treatment facilities.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Water Resources Headquarters announced on April 24 that it will carry out a comprehensive inspection of 1,425 private sewage treatment facilities in the province, including individual, multi-use, and convenience facilities, from April 25 to June 23.

This inspection targets small-scale sewage treatment facilities with a daily treatment capacity of less than 50 cubic meters, located in areas where public sewage treatment facilities have not been installed.

The Water Resources Headquarters will focus on monitoring and inspecting acts such as discharging domestic wastewater without treatment, abnormal operation including cutting off power to sewage treatment facilities, and compliance with effluent water quality standards and post-management standards.

Facilities found in violation during the inspection will be subject to administrative measures under the Sewerage Act, including prosecution, fines, or orders for improvement. For sewage treatment facilities located within the Paldang Water Source Management Area, additional measures such as facility operation and technical support consulting through specialized management companies, as well as improvement of aging facilities, will also be implemented.

Cho Chihyung, Director of Water Quality Management at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "If domestic wastewater is improperly treated and flows into rivers, it can cause water pollution in water sources and pose health risks to residents. We will do our utmost to prevent cases of improper wastewater treatment through continuous inspection and guidance of private sewage treatment facilities, technical support for facility operation, and improvement of aging facilities."
