The son of Lee Chulgyu, a member of the People Power Party who is under suspicion of drug use, has been arrested by the police.
On April 23, Lee Jeongjae, the judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant after conducting a pretrial detention hearing for Mr. Lee, who is suspected of violating the Narcotics Control Act related to cannabis. Judge Lee cited concerns about the risk of flight as the reason for the arrest.
Mr. Lee was apprehended on suspicion of attempting, but failing, to retrieve liquid cannabis that had been buried in a flower bed in a residential area of Seocho-gu, Seoul, using the so-called "throwing" method, while riding in a rental car with his wife and another individual in October of last year. The Seocho Police Station received a report from the National Forensic Service indicating a positive test result for cannabis in Mr. Lee's hair, and subsequently applied for an arrest warrant on April 18. It is also known that Mr. Lee was previously referred to the prosecution on cannabis-related charges, but was not indicted at that time.
