No Six-Day Golden Holiday: Government Dismisses Hopes for Extended Break

'Golden Six-Day Holiday' Unlikely
Government: "May 2 Temporary Public Holiday Not Considered at All"
"June 3, Designated as Election Day, Is Also a Temporary Public Holiday"
"Not Enough Time to Designate a Temporary Public Holiday"

With the government deciding not to designate May 2 as a temporary public holiday, the possibility of a maximum six-day "golden holiday" is unlikely to materialize.

According to relevant ministries on April 23, the government is not considering designating May 2 as a temporary public holiday at all. A government official stated, "Since June 3, the presidential election day, is already designated as a temporary public holiday, the likelihood of May 2 also being made a holiday is low."

There are only nine days left until May 2, so there is not enough time to designate it as a temporary public holiday.

If May 2 were to be designated as a temporary public holiday, office workers and others could enjoy a total of six consecutive days off, starting from Labor Day on the 1st, followed by the weekend (3rd to 4th), Children's Day on the 5th, and the substitute holiday on the 6th. Rumors that the government might designate May 2 as a temporary public holiday have recently spread on social media and online communities, raising expectations among office workers.

Previously, the government and the then-ruling People Power Party designated January 27 as a temporary public holiday, creating a six-day Lunar New Year holiday period. While a golden holiday could boost domestic demand by encouraging travel and other activities, if the results fall short of expectations, it could have the opposite effect and lead to criticism. This is believed to have negatively influenced the argument for designating a temporary public holiday.
