An Additional 20 Tons to Be Exported Soon
Japanese Consumers Give Positive Reviews
The representative rice brand of Haenam, South Jeolla Province, "Ttangkkeut Haetsal," has proven its export competitiveness by selling out its entire shipment in the Japanese market.
According to Haenam County on April 23, Ttangkkeut Haetsal was exported to Japan for the first time last month, with a shipment of 2 tons, and the entire quantity was sold out locally. Ttangkkeut Haetsal is Haenam County's flagship rice brand, which was filed as a brand in 2015 and officially registered as a trademark in 2016.
In particular, fueled by its local popularity, an additional 10 tons were shipped in April, and another 10 tons are scheduled for export in the future, raising expectations for continued demand in the Japanese market.
This achievement is attributed to the high quality and unique taste of Haenam rice, which have resonated with Japanese consumers. Achieving a complete sell-out in the quality-sensitive Japanese market is a meaningful accomplishment, and the positive response from Japanese consumers, who prefer sticky and glossy rice, is increasing the potential for further export expansion.
"Ttangkkeut Haetsal" is a high-quality rice product based on the domestically developed variety "Saechungmu," cultivated in Haenam County, and is also highly preferred in the domestic market. Haenam County plans to enhance the brand's value and establish a long-term export foundation through quality control tailored to the characteristics of the Japanese market and consumer preferences, as well as through localized promotional strategies.
The county plans to actively pursue measures to expand export volumes by broadening negotiations with local distributors in Japan, taking this export success as an opportunity. In addition, the county aims to promote the sustainable growth of local agriculture by developing and distributing globally competitive rice varieties.
A county official stated, "This export to Japan has once again highlighted the quality and marketability of Haenam rice in the international market," adding, "We will cooperate with local farmers to maintain a high-quality rice production system and actively support the expansion of export channels."
Meanwhile, Haenam rice was exported to a total of six countries, including the United States, the Czech Republic, and Canada, amounting to 1,383 tons and 2.954 billion won in value between 2024 and 2025. Building on this export to Japan, Haenam County plans to expand its export destinations to various countries and regions, thereby increasing farmers' income and revitalizing the local economy.
