Up to 2 Million KRW in Support
Easing the Financial Burden
Sunchang County in North Jeolla Province, together with the Sunchang County Okcheon Scholarship Foundation (Chairman: Sunchang County Governor Choi Youngil), is implementing the "2025 Student Living Support Fund" program.
According to the county on April 23, this initiative is a core project among the universal welfare policies of the 8th popularly elected Sunchang County government. It was established to ease the financial burden on local university students so they can focus solely on their studies.
Now in its third year, the program continues to receive strong support from many university students and parents each year, and it also contributes to attracting new residents and increasing the settled population in the region.
The program is operated by Sunchang County providing project funding to the Okcheon Scholarship Foundation, offering practical assistance to students from Sunchang who are currently enrolled in university. A key feature of this program is its focus on alleviating living expenses beyond tuition fees, which has led to a steady application rate each year and positive feedback within the local community.
Eligible applicants are university students who graduated from elementary, middle, or high schools in Sunchang County. As of the first half-year announcement date in 2025 (April 30), if either the student or one parent has been registered as a resident in Sunchang County for at least one year, up to 2 million KRW will be provided.
Additionally, for students who graduated from high schools outside the county or entered university through a high school equivalency exam, the student must have been registered as a resident in Sunchang County for at least one year, and either parent for at least three years. In this case, up to 1 million KRW in living support funds can be received.
Applications can be submitted by visiting the administrative welfare center of the applicant's residential township or town between May 1 and 20, along with the application form and required documents. Detailed eligibility criteria, application requirements, and the list of documents to submit can be found on the official websites of Sunchang County and the Sunchang County Okcheon Scholarship Foundation.
Governor Choi Youngil stated, "This program was established to reduce the financial burden on parents and to allow students to focus on their studies without worrying about living expenses. We will continue to actively support Sunchang's young talents so they can develop their abilities and lead the future of Korea."
Meanwhile, the county is also continuously promoting a variety of education support policies and youth welfare programs. In particular, it is strengthening policies aimed at improving the overall quality of life for young people, including housing, employment, and education.
