Showcasing "Yeongnam Sanjo Dance" at Masan Culture and Arts Center Citizen Theater
Special Appearance by Hong Gitae
Professor Jung Jinwook of the Department of Physical Education at Kyungnam University will present the 23rd edition of "Jung Jinwook's Dance, Time" at the Masan Culture and Arts Center Citizen Theater on April 28 at 7 p.m.
Professor Jung began studying dance at the young age of six. For over 50 years, he has dedicated himself to the research and promotion of both traditional and creative Korean dance. He has distinguished himself by winning the Silver Prize at the 9th Dong-A New Dance Competition, the Gold Prize at the 1st Busan KBS Dance Competition, and the Grand Prize (Presidential Award) at the 9th National Dance Festival. Currently, he continues the tradition as a designated successor of the national intangible cultural heritage Seungmu and Salpuri dance in the Imaebang style. He has also contributed to nurturing the next generation of dancers as a faculty member at Kyungnam University since 2005.
As this will be his final solo performance before retirement, Professor Jung will present "Yeongnam Sanjo Dance," a piece reinterpreted based on the dance of the late Choi Hyun; "Sogo Dance" by Kim Myoseon, newly restructured by combining the restrained and rustic Honam style of the late Imaebang with Hutcheon Dance; and his own interpretations of "Seungmu" and "Salpuri," masterpieces of traditional Korean dance by the late Imaebang.
Hong Gitae, head of Woosong Chumbang and a designated successor of the national intangible cultural heritage Taepyeongmu and Seungmu, will make a special appearance with "Aeryeon," a dance expressing the longing for an unfulfilled love. The performance will be directed by Noh Hyunsik, a designated successor of the national intangible cultural heritage Seungmu, with commentary by Yoon Jungkang, a traditional arts critic, and music direction by Yoo Insang, director of the National Music Institute.
This performance, sponsored by the Department of Physical Education at Kyungnam University, the Korea Dance Association Gyeongsangnam-do Branch, Bisang Korea Dance, and Chango Arts Sol, will be by invitation only. For inquiries regarding the performance, please contact the Department of Physical Education.
