The South Coast Southern Central Region Development Council (Chairman: Jang Chungnam, Namhae County Governor) held its 25th regular meeting in Yeosu on the 22nd, attended by the heads of nine member city and county governments and over 80 working-level officials.


According to Yeosu City, it is customary for the regular meeting to be hosted by the chair city or county. This time, the meeting was specially held in Yeosu to strengthen cooperation among member cities and counties for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo.

They signed a business agreement for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo, confirmed South Korea's hosting of the 33rd United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, and adopted a joint petition requesting the designation of the South Coast Southern Central Region as the venue. The council resolved seven agenda items, including signing a business agreement for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo and adopting a joint petition requesting the confirmation of South Korea as the host of the 33rd United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties and the designation of the South Coast Southern Central Region as the venue.


Jeong Kimyeong, Mayor of Yeosu, asked for support from member cities and counties for the Islands Expo and the bid to host COP33, while emphasizing the importance of close cooperation and solidarity in the South Coast Southern Central Region to overcome the economic downturn and population decline faced by small local cities.


Jang Chungnam, Chairman of the council, stated, "The South Coast Southern Central Region is the center of the South Coast era and a representative model for mutual regional development, possessing South Korea's future industries as well as beautiful natural and cultural tourism heritage." He added, "The council will take the lead in realizing the vision of East-West harmony and balanced regional development, contributing to national unity."


Meanwhile, the South Coast Southern Central Region Development Council is an administrative consultative body established by nine cities and counties in eastern Jeollanam-do and western Gyeongsangnam-do for East-West harmony and mutual development between Yeongnam and Honam. The council has been promoting various cooperative projects, including sports and cultural exchanges, revitalization of wide-area tourism, and joint sales of local agricultural specialties.
