Dong-gu Daejeon Confirms Honorary "Oh Sangwook Street" Near West Gate of Daejeon University

On April 22, Dong-gu District in Daejeon announced that it held an Address Information Committee meeting in the district office's main conference room and deliberated and approved the honorary street naming of "Oh Sangwook Street."

The "Oh Sangwook Street" naming project is a special initiative by Dong-gu to commemorate Oh Sangwook, a graduate of Daejeon University and the first Asian fencer to achieve an individual Grand Slam, who has also made a positive impact through ongoing charitable activities. The project aims to honor his achievements and promote local tourism and economic revitalization.

Since November of last year, the district has been conducting planning and on-site surveys, gathering opinions and conducting surveys among Daejeon University and local residents regarding three areas: the main gate, west gate, and south gate of Daejeon University. As a result, the area around "Daehak-ro" near the west gate of Daejeon University, which has high foot traffic and active commercial activity, was found to be the most suitable for the honorary street naming.

Accordingly, the district has designated a total stretch of 900 meters from 757-1 Yongun-dong to 759 Yongun-dong as "Oh Sangwook Street." The plan is to develop the area with pedestrian-friendly facilities, such as sidewalk width, parks, and restaurants, so that tourists can use it safely.

Going forward, the district plans to install honorary street name signs and information boards in both directions to improve accessibility and visibility for tourists.

Park Heejo, Mayor of Dong-gu, stated, "As the outstanding achievements and positive influence of Oh Sangwook in the community will remain as a symbolic space, we will actively utilize this to establish it as a leading cultural and tourism resource for the region."

Previously, on February 27, the district signed a business agreement with Oh Sangwook regarding the honorary street naming.
