Gyeonggi Assembly People Power Party Urges Government, Businesses, and Public to Join Carbon Neutrality on Earth Day, April 22

The Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly People Power Party proposed, "Let's save our planet ourselves," on April 22 in recognition of Earth Day.

On this day, the People Power Party issued a statement, saying, "Earth Day was established to raise nationwide awareness of the seriousness of environmental issues after the oil spill that occurred in California, United States, in 1969. Although it has been 55 years since it was designated as an international observance, we still have a long way to go."

The statement continued, "According to the '2024 State of the Global Climate' report released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in March, last year's global average temperature rose by 1.55 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels," adding, "This means that the threshold for climate change, which the international community has long warned about, has been breached."

Furthermore, the party said, "Our country has also reached a dead end. According to the '2024 Abnormal Climate Report' published by the Korea Meteorological Administration in April, not only did abnormal high temperatures persist throughout the year, but the number of heatwave days reached 24, which is 2.3 times higher than the average of 10.6 days."

They particularly emphasized, "The prolonged heatwaves until September, unexpected torrential downpours and localized heavy rains, and heavy snowfall in November have all caused significant social and economic damage due to various abnormal climate phenomena. Now is the time for all of us to pursue sustainable change together to save our home, the Earth."

They further urged, "The government must develop environmental policies at the national level to respond to the climate crisis, and companies must actively engage in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management. The private sector should also actively participate in carbon neutrality practices that can be implemented in everyday life."
