Recorded 76% Recovery Efficiency in Assessment Conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Research
The municipal solid waste incineration facility in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do, has once again proven its status as an eco-friendly incineration plant by being selected as a "2024 Energy Recovery Efficiency Certification Institution" by the Ministry of Environment.
On April 22, the Gongju city government announced that the incineration facility received a certificate after recording a recovery efficiency of 76% in the "Energy Recovery Efficiency Certification" assessment conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Research.
The "Energy Recovery Efficiency Certification" is a system that evaluates the efficiency of energy recovery by analyzing the ratio between energy generated during the waste incineration process and energy input from external sources. Facilities with an efficiency rate exceeding 50% become eligible for a reduction in waste disposal charges.
The city's incineration facility achieved a 76% efficiency rate, surpassing 75%, ranking among the top local governments nationwide.
As a result, the city was able to reduce its waste disposal charges by approximately 155 million won out of a total of 207 million won, thereby achieving significant budget savings.
For about the past 10 years, the municipal solid waste incineration facility has been converting waste heat generated during the incineration process into steam, supplying it to nearby industrial complexes and generating non-tax revenue of around 2 billion won annually.
This achievement is attributed to the proactive administration of the Resource Circulation Division staff, as well as the eco-friendly management strategies and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices of Green EM Tech Co., Ltd., which currently operates the facility under contract.
Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, "This certification goes beyond a mere technical achievement and will serve as an important foundation for Gongju City to realize sustainable resource circulation and carbon neutrality policies," adding, "We will continue to pursue responsible environmental administration for future generations."
