Sagajeong Market Selected for the "First Step Foundation Project" by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Small Enterprise and Market Service
Secures 240 Million Won in Funding... Takes a Leap Toward Becoming a Cultural Tourism Market
Sagajeong Market, located in Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu (headed by District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi), has been finally selected as the recipient of the "Specialized First Step Market Foundation Project" in the "2025 2nd Traditional Market and Shopping District Revitalization Support Program" competition.
The "First Step Foundation Project" is an initiative led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Small Enterprise and Market Service. It aims to strengthen both the internal and external capabilities of commercial districts in order to revitalize neighborhood economies and local businesses.
With this selection, Sagajeong Market has secured a total project budget of 240 million won, including both national and local government funding. The market will focus on building its foundation by improving payment convenience, standardizing price and origin labeling, enhancing hygiene and environmental infrastructure, strengthening merchant organization capabilities, and improving safety management within the market, all to boost the competitiveness of traditional markets and transform into a cultural tourism-oriented market.
In particular, through this project, Sagajeong Market plans to promote a variety of content and experiential programs, such as digital price and origin labeling, operating the Sagajeong Flea Market, and running the Sagajeong Clean Day campaign. Customized training for merchants will also be provided to enhance the overall competitiveness of the market.
Sagajeong Market is a community-based market that has long been loved by local residents for its signature foods such as pork bulgogi, handmade tofu, and dumplings, as well as its traditional and welcoming atmosphere. With its proximity to Sagajeong Station on Subway Line 7, the influx of hikers from Yongmasan, and its location near densely populated residential areas, the market aims to transform into a cultural tourism-oriented destination in the future.
Ryu Gyeonggi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, "This project is a major turning point that will allow Sagajeong Market to preserve its traditions while evolving into a modern, multi-purpose cultural tourism market. We will continue to provide strong support for the revitalization of the local economy and traditional markets."
