Han Ducksoo, Acting President and Prime Minister, sent a message of condolence to Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, on the passing of Pope Francis on the 21st, stating, "The government and people of the Republic of Korea share in the sorrow with Catholics around the world and offer our heartfelt condolences."
According to the Prime Minister's Office, in his message Han paid tribute to the Pope, saying, "His Holiness delivered a message of love and solidarity to humanity through the teaching that 'we are all brothers and sisters,' and devoted his life to the poor and the marginalized, practicing a life of peace and reconciliation."

He continued, "In particular, during his visit to the Republic of Korea in 2014, His Holiness prayed for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula, delivered a message of hope to the Korean Church and people, and at the closing Mass of World Youth Day Lisbon 2023, announced 'Seoul, Republic of Korea' as the host of the next 'World Youth Day 2027.' I believe these acts recognized Korea as a center of world peace and expressed his special affection for our country."
Han stated, "We will remember the teachings of love and peace that His Holiness shared with the world," and added, "I pray that the Pope's noble soul may find eternal rest and peace in the embrace of Jesus Christ."
