'Discover' Placed on the Left Side of the Screen
'At a Glance' Displays Weather and Schedules

Google Homepage with Only a Search Bar Set for Major Overhaul to Resemble Naver Photo posted on June 9 (local time) by Gianluca Fiorelli, an SEO expert from Italy, on his X (formerly Twitter). He commented, "It's interesting that the 'Discover' feature, which Google previously offered only on mobile, has been expanded to the PC home screen."

Google's iconic homepage, once known for its colorful logo and single search bar, is expected to undergo a transformation to resemble platforms like Naver and Daum. Content such as news articles, weather, and schedules will likely be added to the main page.

According to industry sources on April 23, Google unveiled its new homepage at its 'Search Central Live' event held in Madrid, Spain, on April 9 (local time). Search Central Live is an event hosted by Google's search team for industry stakeholders such as website operators, SEO experts, and developers.

The newly revealed homepage features the 'Discover' and 'At a Glance' functions, which were previously available only on mobile, now moved to the left and right sides of the main page. Discover is a feature that automatically displays cards with content tailored to the user's interests, based on their search data. These cards also include interactive elements such as heart icons and sharing symbols. The 'At a Glance' section allows users to view weather, stocks, schedules, and frequently visited sites. Similar to Naver's homepage, the Google logo and search bar are positioned at the very top of the screen.

Google's mobile homepage is expected to become even more personalized. By selecting interests such as 'street fashion' or 'Falcon Games', users will receive content focused on related news. Tapping the 'Collections' tab at the bottom of the screen will likely take users to a page where their favorite content is saved.

Previously, in October 2023, Google began testing a revamped PC homepage in the Indian market. At that time, the homepage featured news headlines, weather, sports, and stocks. In August 2022, Google provided some users with widgets for weather, stocks, sports, and recommended content, arranged in a row beneath the search bar.

Google's decision to revamp its homepage is interpreted as a strategy to increase user interaction. Until now, Google has focused solely on search, aiming to help users find the information they want and leave the Google page as quickly as possible, following its founding philosophy that "fast is better than slow." However, recently, Google has shifted its approach to proactively suggest areas of interest and encourage users to interact by making selections.

When Google first introduced Discover to its mobile homepage in October 2018, the US tech media outlet The Verge analyzed that this reflected a changed attitude toward information search at Google, stating, "Google now wants to predict what users want before they even search."
