Proving Global Competence... POSCO Pohang Steelworks Competes in Steel Challenge World Championship as East Asia Champion

Five Leading Global Steelmakers Compete in Sydney, Australia

On April 8, POSCO Pohang Steelworks participated in the 19th Steel Challenge World Championship held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney, Australia, as the East Asia champion.

Proving Global Competence... POSCO Pohang Steelworks Competes in Steel Challenge World Championship as East Asia Champion On the 8th, the STS Steelmaking Department of Pohang Steelworks participated in the Steel Challenge World Championship.

Since 2005, the Steel Challenge has been held annually as an international competition in which more than 120 steel companies from around the world take part. Steel engineers compete in a simulation contest to demonstrate their understanding of steel manufacturing processes and their optimization skills.

Pohang Steelworks claimed the title of East Asia champion at the regional competition held in December last year, showcasing their expertise in optimal raw material blending and operation pattern design, and participated in this world championship as the regional representative.

This year's event featured POSCO representing East Asia, HBIS from North Asia, EMSTEEL from West Asia, Acerinox from Europe and Africa, and ArcelorMittal from the Americas.

Each participating company was tasked with simulations aimed at maximizing electric arc furnace power efficiency and minimizing heat loss, in order to improve the efficiency of steel production.

The simulation was deemed successful if the given conditions, such as composition and temperature, were met, and the results were posted in real time on the Leader Board.

The final rankings were determined by the lowest cost, with the world champion title awarded to the first-place winner and the remaining four participants receiving the regional champion titles.

POSCO made a strong effort to win the world champion title, but unfortunately, first place went to HBIS from North Asia.

Park Boseong, assistant manager of the STS Steelmaking Department, said, "It was an honor to interact and compete with employees from leading steel companies around the world, and it was an opportunity for significant growth."

POSCO plans to continue expanding its network with global steelmakers and to apply the ideas gained from these challenges to its operations, aiming to establish itself as a global leader with unrivaled technological capabilities.
