Lights Out for 10 Minutes Starting at 8:00 p.m.
On April 21, the Chungnam Provincial Government announced that, in celebration of the 55th Earth Day, it will hold a lights out event on April 22 from 8:00 p.m. for 10 minutes, with participation from both the public and private sectors, to promote a culture of carbon neutrality.
According to the province, the Earth Day lights out campaign will involve simultaneously turning off lights at the main provincial government building, major public institutions, and symbolic landmarks throughout the province, with the aim of encouraging residents to adopt carbon-neutral practices.
Starting with the lights out event on April 22, the province will designate the following four days, until April 25, as Climate Change Week. During this period, the goal is to raise awareness among residents about the seriousness of the climate crisis and to encourage actionable climate behaviors that contribute to building a carbon-neutral society.
This year’s Climate Change Week will be held under the theme "Let’s Take Climate Action! Let’s Embrace Adaptive Living!" and will feature various campaigns designed to deepen residents’ understanding of and support for carbon neutrality.
Key initiatives include a campaign to eliminate single-use items from daily life, a no-food-waste day at the staff cafeteria, a 50% discount on beverages for those using tumblers at the provincial government’s Hope Caf?, environmental cleanup volunteer activities, and a digital carbon footprint reduction campaign.
In addition, cities and counties will conduct both online and offline promotional activities, such as a climate action pledge campaign in Gongju, a climate crisis awareness exhibition in Boryeong, an Earth Day Life Festival in Dangjin, and Earth Day events in Taean County.
Kim Youngmyung, Director of the Provincial Environment and Forestry Bureau, stated, "The climate crisis is a critical issue that we must all address together," and urged, "I ask all residents to actively participate in the lights out event on April 22, as well as the various campaigns and practical activities taking place during Climate Change Week."
