Newlywed Couples Aged 18 to 45 Who Registered Their Marriage After January 1
On April 21, the city of Gongju in South Chungcheong Province announced that it will provide a marriage incentive payment of 5 million won to newlywed couples starting in May, as part of efforts to address the deepening low birth rate issue.
The city expects that this marriage incentive program will serve as a cornerstone not only for encouraging marriage but also for building a sustainable, birth-friendly city.
The support is available to newlywed couples aged 18 to 45 who have registered their marriage on or after January 1, 2025. At least one spouse must have been a registered resident of Gongju for at least one year prior to the marriage registration date, and both spouses must be Gongju residents at the time of application.
The marriage incentive payment of 5 million won per couple will be provided in three installments through "Gongju Pay," a local gift certificate.
Applications can be submitted in person at local administrative welfare centers starting May 1, and must be made within one year of the marriage registration date.
However, if either spouse moves out of the city or the marriage is dissolved during the payment period, the support will be discontinued.
Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, "Childbirth is the future of our region. I hope the marriage incentive will serve as a catalyst for encouraging marriage and childbirth among young people," adding, "We will continue to implement a variety of policies to make our city a better place to have and raise children."
