This year's event featured a lecture by Naminae, a professor at Seoul National University, who has consistently advocated the value of reading and writing, under the theme "Books Are People. And People Are Books." Minister Yoon Inchon and Professor Naminae, along with KBS announcer Jung Yongshil, discussed the value of books in our lives and shared their own ways of enjoying books.
From April 4 to 9, 100 people were selected from among those who applied in advance to give a book as a gift and shared their stories. Books and roses were chosen as the gifts. Minister Yoon Inchon, Professor Kwon Sooyoung of Yonsei University, and Kim Minsik, a producer at MBC, delivered the gifts and shared the stories with the recipients.
The Ministry is recruiting 1,500 participants for the "Reading Korea" campaign. Ten experts in various fields, including entrepreneurship, culture, arts, sports, empathy, and communication, will be designated as "book mentors" and will conduct certification activities such as online reading, writing one-line reviews, and transcribing passages together with the 1,500 participants. The book mentors will encourage reading every month through both online and offline activities.
Those wishing to participate in the campaign can use the QR code found in the book club guide distributed at the information booth in the outdoor history yard of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History from April 20 to 23, or visit the Reading Korea blog.
Minister Yoon Inchon stated, "In the era of digital video, 'depth' is as important a value as 'speed,' and books can provide the answer. Through this year's 'Reading Korea' campaign, I hope people across the country will rediscover the joy of reading and that the culture of gifting books through local bookstores will spread widely. The Ministry will continue to strengthen customized reading policies in cooperation with related ministries so that everyone can enjoy books in their daily lives, and will also connect these efforts with literature, library, and humanities policies to enrich people's lives and further blossom our culture."
