"Wait, Who Is That Mom?"... Even the Drone Couldn't Keep Up in the Parents' 100m Race

Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce Dominates Parents' Race at Her Son's School Sports Day
Even the Drone Couldn't Keep Up: Olympic Gold Medalist's Participation Sparks Online Reactions

The identity of the parent who displayed overwhelming skill in the parents' 100m race at a school sports day has become a hot topic. Demonstrating running speed so fast that even a drone could not keep up, the parent turned out to be none other than Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce (38, Jamaica), the living legend of women's sprinting.

On April 18 (local time), US magazine People and other outlets reported that Fraser-Pryce participated in the parents' 100m race at her son Zyon's school sports day the previous day. In a video capturing the event, Fraser-Pryce, dressed in blue, surged far ahead of the other parents as soon as the race started, eventually even outpacing the drone that was filming her. She reached the finish line nearly 20 meters ahead of the other parents. In a case of "like mother, like son," her son Zyon reportedly also took first place in the hurdles event.

Fraser-Pryce posted the drone-filmed video of her run on Instagram, joking, "I'm still eligible to compete because I haven't been banned yet." Netizens reacted with amusement, saying, "First place is already decided, so the real competition is for second," "The parent who came in second can boast about losing to an Olympic gold medalist," "Even the drone couldn't keep up with her," "Isn't this cheating?" and "It's so unfair."

Fraser-Pryce also competed in the parents' race at the school sports day last year, overwhelmingly taking first place. At the time, she said, "I originally had no intention of joining the parents' race," but added, "As an Olympic athlete, I thought it wouldn't make sense for my family to go home without a gold medal, so I decided to participate."

Meanwhile, Fraser-Pryce is one of the greatest sprinters of all time, having won three Olympic gold medals, four silver medals, and one bronze medal, as well as a total of 16 medals (10 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze) at the World Championships. Notably, she won consecutive women's 100m gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, and claimed gold in the 4x100m relay at the Tokyo Olympics. She also holds a personal best of 10.60 seconds in the 100m, making her the third-fastest woman in history.

After giving birth to her son Zyon in August 2017, Fraser-Pryce returned to the track. Despite her height of just 152 cm, her explosive acceleration earned her the nickname "Pocket Rocket," and after becoming a mother, she also became known as "Mommy Rocket." She went on to win the women's 100m at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha and again at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene. However, while preparing for the Paris Olympics last year, she suffered an injury and withdrew from the women's 100m semifinals. Although she initially planned to retire after the Paris Olympics, she recently announced her intention to make a comeback.
