On April 20, the city of Gwangju announced that it will provide support for crop disaster insurance premiums to help farmers maintain stable farming operations amid a sharp increase in crop damage caused by abnormal weather conditions.

The support for crop disaster insurance premiums is intended to alleviate management instability caused by crop disasters, stabilize farmers' incomes, and reduce disaster recovery costs. The city will allocate a total of 4.3 billion won, including 660 million won from the city budget, to cover 80% of the insurance premiums. Farmers will only need to pay 20% of the premiums themselves. Approximately 3,000 farms in the Gwangju area are expected to benefit from this program. In the event of damage, insurance payouts will be determined and paid based on the actual scale of losses assessed.

The insurance covers 76 types of crops, including apples, pears, grapes, peaches, and rice. Any farmer who cultivates eligible crops within the city and is registered as an agricultural business operator can enroll in the insurance through their local agricultural cooperative at any time throughout the year.

Nam Taeksong, Director of the Agricultural and Animal Policy Division, stated, "Crop disaster insurance is one of the most effective means of responding to natural disasters, as it can substantially reduce damage to farmers and support stable farming operations." He added, "We will actively promote the program to encourage more farmers to enroll and will continue to expand our support."
